Providing NHS services

Medical Advisory Committee

Somerset Surgical Services Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) meets to discuss all aspects of clinical practice.

The MAC is part of the clinical governance framework that ensures patients referred to Somerset Surgical Services can be assured of a high quality, safe and effective pathway of care.

All Consultants working with Somerset Surgical Services are invited to attend the MAC which meets on a six-monthly basis. The MAC aims to include Consultant representatives from each specialty where elective activity is undertaken.

Clinicians wishing to practice with Somerset Surgical Services must apply through a recognised application process called Practice Privileges and have their application ratified by the Medical Advisory Committee.

The MAC has a number of specific duties including governance of the practising privilege process, representing the professional needs and views of the clinical team, reviewing activity undertaken against Key Performance Indicators as well as reviewing the clinical effectiveness of treatments in line with national and local guidelines.
